All eyes will be on Leeds United following their relegation from the Championship last season. However, they may not find life in the third tier as easy as the bookmakers may have you believe.

Here we take a look at some of the teams who will be challenging for promotion and those who are likely to spend the campaign trying to avoid relegation to the “dungeon”. First of all, who will be challenging for promotion?

Nottingham Forest
Last season’s bookies favourites had the layers rubbing their hands with glee as Colin Calderwood’s side failed to keep up with promoted Scunthorpe and Bristol City. Favourites this time around again, this could be the season Forest return to the second tier. Veteran Neil Lennon will bring some order into central midfield and highly rated Kris Commons has signed a new one-year deal with the club.

Leeds United
Leeds finished bottom of the Championship last season after they went into voluntary administration and incurred a 10 point deduction. The bookmakers have named them as one of the favourites to win the league but Dennis Wise’s side will not find life in League One a cakewalk. Opposition teams will see Leeds as a scalp and will undoubtedly raise their game whether at Elland Road or on their own turf. It took the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester City a few seasons to escape the third tier and Leeds are unlikely to be any different.

Doncaster Rovers
Tipped for promotion last season, Doncaster finished in eleventh place and some 12 points adrift of the play-offs. Manager Sean O’Driscoll has prepared for another assault on promotion with the permanent transfer of Leeds goalkeeper Neil Sullivan and strikers James Hayter from Bournemouth and Rotherham’s Martin Woods have been drafted in to assist 21-goal Paul Heffernen in attack.

Promotion 4.5 (Ladbrokes - £20 in Free Bets!)

Swansea City
Swansea have been knocking on the door of promotion for the last couple of seasons and this time they could finally escape from League One under the guidance of new manager Roberto Martinez. Fulham midfielder Matty Collins joined on a free transfer as did Spanish duo Angel Rangel from Terrassa and Guillem Bauza Mayol from Espanyol. Martinez also brought in midfielder Ferrie Bodde from Den Haag and Daryl Duffy in a £200,000 deal from Hull.

Now for those likely to be at the other end of the table.

Cheltenham Town
The bookmakers favourites for relegation after avoiding the drop by seven points last season. However, John Ward’s side will be without top goal scorer Kayode Odejayi after he left for Barnsley in a £200,000 switch. The Robins will miss the 15-goals he scored last term as well as the eight JJ Melligan netted from midfield after joining Leyton Orient on a free transfer. Add to this Grant McCann’s January move to Burnley and Town are looking distinctly lightweight.
Relegation 2.38 (Paddy Power - £25 in Free Bets!)

Leyton Orient
Martin Ling’s side defied gravity last season and managed to finish four points above the relegation zone. This season is set to be another battle against the drop and it will be a new look side doing so after losing eight players, including 12-goal top goal scorer Gary Alexander on free transfers. Five new faces have arrived, including Cheltenham’s JJ Melligan, but like the latter’s former club, Orient look like relegation fodder next season.
Relegation 2.5 (Paddy Power - £25 in Free Bets!)

AFC Bournemouth
Bournemouth struggled last season, finishing five points above the relegation zone and it is difficult to see how things are going to improve. A guaranteed source of goals for the team, James Hayter joined League One rivals Doncaster Rovers in a £200,000 deal but the Cherries have brought in Brentford striker Jo Kuffour on a free transfer, who scored 14 goals for all competitions last season.
Relegation 2.88 (Paddy Power - £25 in Free Bets!)

Walsall
Walsall returned to League One after one season away by winning League Two on the final day of the season. Free scoring midfielder Dean Keates left for Peterborough on a free transfer as did Chris Westwood, while Craig Pead to Brentford and Hector Sam to Notts County has broken up a winning team.
Relegation 3.75 (Ladbrokes - £20 in Free Bets!)

Northampton Town
The Cobblers ended relegation fears that haunted them for much of the campaign by ending the season in 14th position. Manager Stuart Gray has had a major clear-out, axing seven players and transferring David Hunt to Shrewsbury. Strikers Ian Henderson from Norwich and Colin Larkin from relegated Chesterfield have been brought in to fill the goal scoring void left by the January transfer window departure of Scott McGleish to Wycombe. Avoiding relegation will be next season’s key objective.
Relegation 4.0 (Bet365 - £100 in Free Bets!)
