The pinnacle of Newmarket’s racing extravaganza is the six furling, Darley July Cup, which takes place this year on Friday 13 at 3.10 in the afternoon.
At such a short distance and with 22 horses named to particpate so far, picking out a winner is a minefield to punters. Here is a preview of the race to help you reach a betting decision!
This year’s line up looks strong with Sakhee’s Secret, Dutch Art, Asset and Soldier’s Tale currently heading the billing.
Despite being the current bookmaker’s favourite, three year old colt Sakhee’s Secret still may have a bit to prove at this level and has not faced opponents of this calibre before in his short career.
Since the weather has finally lived up to its July billing, the ground may be too dry for Soldier’s Tale, who narrowly beat Asset at Royal Ascot thanks to the cut up ground.
However, Asset showed great pace in that race and was only just beaten into third despite not being fully fit and the ground being too soft for him. This could be his race but he will be closely challenged by Dutch Art who is perhaps better suited to sprint events.
Further down in the betting, Amadeus Wolf was disappointing during his 11th placed finish in the Golden Jubilee whil Bentley Biscuit remains an outsider despite rave reviews in recent times. The Australian horse may find the going a bit too quick for him if the ground continues to dry out this week.
